When you use pickles with your food, you might top a burger, stuff them in a sandwich, or toss them in a salad. When you imagine a pizza, you think of gooey, delicious cheese and rich sauce, like a truffle or cream-based white sauce or a fragrant marinara, with classic toppings of cheese, meat, olives, and vegetables. What you don't think of? Putting pickles on top of that beautiful slice of pizza.

You might recoil in disgust now, but pickle pizza is quickly becoming a common sight on pizza restaurant menus. In fact, you can even order a pickle pizza straight to your door.

So where did this pickle pizza craze start? A few years ago, a pizza place called QC Pizza in Mahtomedi, Minn., created a pizza with dill pickles on it as a topping. It went viral, as crazy food combinations often do. Called the Kinda Big Dill Pizza, the pie got tons of attention, with more than 16 million views on Facebook.

The Kinda Big Dill Pizza is based on the idea of Minnesota Sushi, a snack of cream cheese spread over a dill pickle, then wrapped in ham and sliced similarly to what you'd do with a sushi roll.

Where to Buy Pickle Pizza

The pickle pizza from QC Pizza has a layer of garlic-dill sauce that's topped with slices of 48-hour smoked Canadian bacon first. Then, they add pickle slices, mozzarella cheese, and another final layer of pickle slices, along with some sprinkled dill to round it all out.

What's more, you can now order the pizza online and get it delivered to your home. Owner Dennis Schneekloth says the pizza will be joining Goldbelly's nationwide delivery service, so you can try this Internet-famous pizza yourself. A pack of 3 will cost $99, but shipping is free.

How to Make Your Own Pickle Pizza at Home

If you won't be in Minnesota soon, or you aren't sure you'll be able to eat three from the Goldbelly delivery, you can make your own pickle pizza at home. It's as simple as adding pickles to any pizza. But, of course, pizzas that are made to have pickles will be even better. These three recipes will get you started.

This savory Garlicky Bacon and Pickle Pizza has spice, meat, and cheese for a really comforting, rich feel. There are two kinds of cheeses — gouda is great here, but you can sub for pepper Jack if you like — bacon, garlic, and pickles, of course. Plus it takes just 15 minutes to make, which is far faster than any takeout.

BBQ Pork Pizza

Barbecue pulled pork has a thin, tender texture for the pizza, and mozzarella cheese is a light and gooey partner. Of course those sliced pickles are just an added bonus to bring a punch of extra flavor, some crunch, and a bit of acidity. Feel free to add more veggies on top of this BBQ Pork Pizza, like bell pepper or broccoli.
