We Made 3-Ingredient Gatorade Bread

Is the trendy, pastel bread worth the hype? We found out.

Be it sourdough, focaccia, or good ol' banana bread, chances are you've baked a loaf of bread within the last year. Combine that with the TikTok community's quest for easy meals and you get things like 3-ingredient Gatorade bread, which, if nothing else, is a colorful, electrolyte-rich spin on a kitchen staple.

As we've established, one of the bread's three ingredients in fact is Gatorade. The other two are active dry yeast and all-purpose flour. A sugary sports drink may sound like a strange ingredient, but it doesn't just work — it also takes a step out of the recipe.

To make your own Gatorade bread, start by heating ¼ cup of the Gatorade of your choice in a microwave-safe bowl. It's important that your Gatorade is warm, not hot, because otherwise the heat will kill the yeast. If you want to get technical, the best range is between 100 and 110 degrees. Next, stir in a package of active dry yeast. Here's where you save a bit of time. Normally, when making bread, you would have to add sugar to the warm water and yeast mixture, but Gatorade already has the sugar right there. So it's actually helping the yeast rise. Mix well, and let sit for 10 minute so the yeast can fully activate.

Next, add 1 ¼ cups of all-purpose flour to a mixing bowl. You can also add a bit of salt, if you like, to improve the taste. Pour an additional ¾ cup of warm Gatorade and the yeast mixture and mix until combined. Add another 1 ¼ cup of flour, mix that in, and knead until soft, about 9–10 minutes. Once it's thoroughly kneaded, place the dough back in the mixing bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let sit for 30 minutes.

Punch the dough down, and place on a flour-covered baking sheet. Let it rise for 1 hour. Cut a large X into the top and bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 30 minutes. And if you're still doubtful about Gatorade bread, check out Annie's experimentation above. Spoiler alert: It's beautiful.
