This recipe was simple and perfect, I used onion powder instead of onions and left out the peppers. Put it in heated pepperidge farm hoagie rolls instead of buns, absolutely delicious!
Even with cutting the sugar in half and adding twice the water I found it too sweet for my tastes. The only way I could temper it was by adding a *lot* of rice, unsalted peanuts, and some la choy crunchy noodles.
Cut the sugar down to say 1/4th and it would be a solid winner imho.
These were delicious, and relatively simple to make, but there's a hidden caveat in that "relative." The amount of time involved is in my opinion prohibitive in contrast to vastly more simple batter and fry recipes with spiced tampuras, beer batters, crumb coating of some kind etc. While the taste is great, it's not so much better then the much faster alternatives.
I made the soup (almost) as written with a sale basket of farmers market tomatoes and worcestershire sauce instead of the sardine. I found to be rather bland so I slowly heated and stirred in some onion powder, about a half cup fresh finely diced basil, some parmesan cheese, and a half cup of whipping cream. Wow. That was a super kick up a notch an it was utterly delicious.
I'm on a low sodium diet so switched some ingredients, but it came out delicious! I left out the salt, used unsalted butter, and substituted Ener-G baking powder. I also doubled the recipe, taking suggestions from other comments to switch half brown half white sugar. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract and a half teaspoon of cinnamon.
I then used two greased and floured meatloaf pans, baking for the same hour at 350F. Wonderfull!
This is a great base recipe to prepare as it stands or modify to suit your tastes. I cut the recipe in 1/2, and instead of heavy cream I used cottage cheese blended smooth in a food processor. Like others suggested, I used a couple bay leaves and bacon bits, also a teaspoon of curry powder.
To help thicken it further I used a hand potato masher 4-5 times to crush the potatoes slightly and release their starch. The taste was rich and delightful.
