Great base recipe! I made a large batch for family dinner and froze 2 quarts for a lazy day. I decided to go with: (1 large) Shaved carrot coins, (2) thin sliced celery, (6) small chopped onions, (2) small cabbages, (2 lbs) ground beef, (1lb) ground mild Italian sausage, (4 tbs) tomato paste, (2) chopped fresh tomatoes, (3 x 28oz) Diced Tomato Cans, (6) cloves garlic minced; seasoned to taste with kosher salt, plenty of fresh ground pepper, garlic granules, onion powder, pinch of cumin, shake of cayenne pepper, paprika. Use a very large Dutch oven or split in batches - simmered 45 minutes. FYI- left-overs tasted even better after spending the night in the fridge. Baked bread and butter go so well with this.
