I always increase the greens (and use whatever greens I have on hand) and often swap the cream for coconut milk or blenderized cottage cheese (to reduce the fat).
EXCELLENT recipe! I used only 1/4 cup oil and omitted the baking soda solution and they were perfect amd exactly as described: crispy on the outside with a chewy thickness inside. They reheated beautifully in the toaster oven. We will be adding these to our breakfast-for-dinner menu for sure!
This is fool-proof bread. I make it using 3/4 cup softened butter instead of the oil, heaping portions of the spices, and add 1 teaspoon of molasses (or use brown sugar instead of white).
Delicious and a great basis for any winter squash bean soup you want to create. I used a combo of butternut and delicate squashes with yellow split peas instead of black beans. I added a bay leaf, cumin, and coriander as others mentioned. I only had marinara in my fridge instead of tomatoes and I added a cup of salsa verde. Then I added meat from smoked pork ribs instead of ham. Oh my goodness, it was delicious!
This is so good! I increase the veggies except onion to 3 cups each and add some frozen corn at the end. I melt the butter, cook the veggies, stir in the flour to cook 2 minutes while stirring, pour in clam juice from two 10 oz cans, add the milk (2%) mixed with a few schools of powdered milk. Our favorite seasonings are salt and black pepper to taste and about 1 t each parsley, thyme, and Old Bay seasoning. The clams and a few dashes if vinegar are stirred in before serving.
Really, really good! I made adjustments based on what I had at home and cooked it in the crockpot on high for 3 hours. Will definitely make again. changed to: two green bell peppers, no chipotle sauce, no chiles, hot salsa instead of fire roasted tomatoes, pinto and kidney bean mix, regulag paprika, no sugar, a good ale, soy sauce instead of Worchestershire sauce.
