I hate to say this but this recipe is better than my grandmas. I've used my grandmas recipe for 50 years. The next 20 years...hopefully, I'll be using this one. Delicious and buttery. You'll need to work quickly as the dough softens fast and becomes difficult to work with. Its all that wonderful butter inside. I cut out my shapes and then ball up the leftovers and put it in the freezer to set up. Id pull that out of the freezer and reroll once it hardens some.

It was delicious. I didn't have whole wheat or rye flours but I had spelt and oatmeal so I substituted the spelt for the WW and ground oatmeal into flour for the rye. Totally worked!

I did as stated in the recipe. I was concerned about the amount of water as someone else was, but read through the reviews and found one that said add about 1 inch of water. That worked perfectly. Baked for 90 minutes and it was perfect for mashed squash. IF you are wanting chunks for salads or some other preparation, then bake for less time as the squash was very mushy at 90 minutes and would have been horrible for chunks.

When I made up the batter, I was a bit worried that the batter was SOO thick! But I was all ready in all the way so why not bake them up and see what happens. Amazing! Only change I made was using frozen blue berries.

Oh.My.Word.!!!! This is phenomenal! Made as written with fresh tree ripened mangoes. Better than grandmas...but don't tell her... This is my new favorite sweet bread.

I made the recipe as is, minus the saffron as my mangoes were ripe and needed no help in color. I’m giving the recipe a 2 Star due to the jam not setting up at all even though the sugar mix set perfectly. I’m not sure if I had too much mango pulp or not enough pulp because I had no clue as to weight. Most kitchens don’t have a scale to measure 2 lbs of mangoes so I had to guess. Cups of mango chunks, purée would have been helpful vs. as written. I’m passing on using in the future but it was fun trying and it is delicious but will use it more as a topping for desserts than a jam.
