Homestyle Kalua Pork with Cabbage in a Slow Cooker

Inspired by the luaus in Hawaii, I set out to make an easy, tasty homestyle slow-cooker version of kalua pork with cabbage. The meat is fall-off-the-bone yummy. This recipe is not overly smoky, but you may add more smoke if you like. Serve with rice, buns, or poi.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt

  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1 (5 pound) bone-in pork shoulder roast

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring

  • ½ large head cabbage, shredded

Directions

  1. Combine salt, pepper, and ground ginger in a bowl; evenly rub onto pork roast then place into a slow cooker.

  2. Whisk soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid smoke together in a bowl; pour over pork roast. Cover slow cooker.

  3. Cook on Low for 10 hours. Add cabbage to slow cooker; cook 30 minutes more. Shred pork to serve.
