The perfect side may exist.

Sonic is home to nugget ice, drink options that allow you to make the wildest concoctions, and throwback drive-in service. We know and love those things about Sonic. However, the chain still offers plenty of “new” that keeps us coming back, from Buffalo Chicken Dip Bites to new burgers to fan favorites returning after some time off the menu.

One of those returning items? Pickle Fries.

What Are Sonic’s Pickle Fries?

The Sonic Pickle Fries are made from dill pickle spears cut into a French-fry shape. The pickles are coated in a light tempura batter and fried. The fried pickles are served with a side of ranch dressing for dunking.

While you may see fried pickles on menus at sports bars and other sit-down restaurants, you rarely see them on fast-food menus, which feels like a missed opportunity. (If you’re already ordering the pickles to top sandwiches and burgers and you’ve got the fryers ready to go, why not add pickle fries to the menu?!)

After launching in the spring of 2022 to positive customer reviews, the pickle fries returned to Sonic’s menu earlier this fall. While they’re a popular option, they are not a permanent one. The fries are only available for a limited time until supplies run out.

Are Sonic's Pickle Fries Any Good?

When the chain announced the return of the pickle fries, fans expressed their excitement. On Instagram, one fan said, “Went straight to Sonic this morning as soon as I got the text! They didn’t disappoint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Another said, “Please I need them to be permanent!”

The couple behind Instagram account JTK Reviews recently tried the new pickle fries and gave the crispy, salty snack a "10 out of 10."

Customers also discussed the value of the fries on a recent Reddit thread, with the original poster noting that they were curious to try them as a homemade-fried pickle lover. Commenters on the thread agreed that the fries are wildly popular and tasty but expressed that the pickle fries can sometimes be less crisp than they’d like. (One commenter advised ordering them “crisp,” presumably meaning they’d ask to fry the pickles longer.)

The thread also suggested that you should make this snack at home if you have the time (and aren’t impressed by the $5 price tag on the Sonic pickle fries). But if you’re out and about and need a salty, briny snack? Sonic's Pickle Fries are where it’s at.
