Carrie Honaker The Spruce Eats

Carrie Honaker is a Florida-based writer who has hauled oyster cages off the Forgotten Coast of Florida, learned to make beef patties from a Jamaican auntie, made Guavaberry Liqueur with a seventh-generation distiller on St. Maarten, and stomped cacao pods in Grenada. She writes about food, drink, travel, and culture for Bon Appetit, Conde Nast Traveler, Wine Enthusiast, Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, and more.

Experience

Spending summers on her great-grandmother’s farm in Highgate, Vermont, Carrie tended an expansive garden; pickled and preserved all manner of produce; cared for pigs, cows and chickens; and learned the intricacies of dough and dandelion wine. This experience in her youth led to a lifetime in restaurant kitchens where she honed her cooking chops, wine knowledge, and pastry art. She has owned a restaurant and consulted for burgeoning restaurateurs on kitchen organization, wine list, food menu development, and the nuts and bolts of setting up a beautiful dining space. After selling her cafe, she taught college and high school English for over a decade until she left to pursue journalism. Today, she leans into writing about the quirkier side of Florida, the farmers and small batch makers around the world, and initiatives to preserve historic art and architecture. She also serves as the restaurant guide for 30a.com.

Education

Carrie has bachelor's and master’s degrees in English from Florida State University. She also has a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of West Florida.
