I Tried Non — the NA Wine That's So Good, It Fooled a Rosé Drinker

This nonalcoholic wine looks, smells, and tastes just like the real thing.

NON wine

My drink of choice is wine — specifically rosé. For that reason, I’ve had a difficult time finding a nonalcoholic wine that satisfies like traditional rosé. I’ve tried so many that are syrupy-sweet and taste like flowery grape juice. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t have high expectations when I ordered a sampler of Non, a 0.0% ABV wine. However, I’m pleased to report it’s now my absolute favorite wine of all time — and yep, I include boozier bottles, too.

Non was founded in 2017 by an Australian entrepreneur. Aaron Trotman’s significant other is sober, and after years of traveling the world in search of gastronomic experiences, they realized the nonalcoholic culinary experience was a little lacking. With that inspiration, he sought to create an NA wine made from fresh produce that looks, smells, and tastes like the real thing. Non is crafted with a full flavor profile, paying particular attention to tannins, minerality, salinity, and floral or fruity notes. It tastes like wine because it is wine — just without the alcohol.

Verjus — the unfermented juice of young, unripened grapes — is a key ingredient to Non’s success. It gives the wines a strong acidic backbone that can stand up to food and never tastes too cloyingly sweet. Right now, Non offers five different blends: 1, a rosé-adjacent wine; 2, a fermented-tasting orange wine dupe; 3, a zippy, bright white; 5, a juicy, jammy light red; and 7, a deep, rich red. Choosing which blend to try is the hardest part of getting on board with this nonalcoholic drink option.

I ordered a sampler of the 1, 3, and 7 and decided to try the bottle of 1 first at a family gathering. I loved it from the very first taste. It’s extremely well-balanced with a gentle effervescence that shines best when the wine is chilled. The presence of salt in the blend tempers any sweetness that comes through from raspberries. Chamomile adds a subtle tannic backbone. I also appreciated that it behaves like a “real” wine, from the bottle to the way it looks in a wine glass. I didn’t feel left out of the party just because I was the only one not imbibing.

But I’ve got to admit, I wasn’t the only one who ended up enjoying Non. I witnessed a pretty amazing moment in which my partner’s father, who had been drinking a traditional rosé, grabbed the bottle of NON, refreshed his glass, and carried on none the wiser. The other bottles have been a hit, too: I gifted the bottle of 7, an elegant blend made with sour cherries, coffee, and cozy baking spices, to my partner’s mother. She brought it to another gathering where she was the designated driver. She reported back happily that she, and every other designated driver, appreciated having a bottle that tasted and drank like a traditional wine.

So how good is Non nonalcoholic wine? I’ll put it this way: In my yearlong quest to find the best nonalcoholic spirits and a perfect NA wine, I’ve tried many options but never had the same one twice. I just placed another order with Non and can’t wait until it arrives.

To buy: Non The Everyday Set, $90 at Non

Editor's Note: Our Senior Commerce Editor Danielle St. Pierre recently tasted the full Everyday Set and particularly loved the frothy and fuschia-hued Non5 Lemon Marmalade & Hibiscus. "This sparkling non-alcoholic wine alternative tastes just as refreshing as it sounds, and now it’s the only thing I want to drink with brunch," she wrote in her full review.

"It reminds me of a kombucha, a lemon bar, an iced tea, and realistically, all three of those things at once. No matter what you taste, I guarantee Non will change your opinion on how complex a non-alcoholic wine can be."
