Jennifer Hawk

Jennifer Hawk is a former English professor with 24 years of experience guiding even the most reluctant through the labyrinths of writing, rhetoric, and research.

Experience

Jennifer is a former academic, a zealous writer, and a part-time freelance copyeditor/proofreader. After completing her MFA in fiction writing in 2000, she began teaching creative writing, composition, literary theory, critical thinking, and literature survey courses as an adjunct at local community colleges and universities. She occasionally teaches law writing and composition courses in a paralegal program.

In 2004 Jennifer founded and directed a community writing center in Orange County, CA: Blue Lotus Writing Academy. The business name derived from her strong commitment to the rise of of knowledge and wisdom as represented in Buddhism by the blue lotus. Jennifer has spent over 20 years as a college professor, but she left public education in 2017 to focus on her mentorship of second generation Korean American students.

Over the last three decades, Jennifer has published nonfiction, short stories, satire, and poetry in small press, anthologies, and blogs. In 2019 she began taking on copyediting/proofreading projects for book-length academic and pop culture texts and master's theses. She has been with Southern Living since 2022.

Notable proofreading projects include Womanist AIDS Activism in the United States (2022) and Compassionate Satanism: An Introduction to Modern Satanic Practice (2021).
