Micah Leal
Title: Recipe Developer and Video Host
Location: Seattle, WA
Expertise: Pastry, Baking, Food Science

Micah was raised in North Georgia and learned the basics of baking from his grandmother. He maintained a love for cooking and baking through his childhood and into his adult life. Out of college, Micah worked as a high school teacher in writing and literature, and he was moved by the opportunity to educate kids all the while wishing he had pursued his culinary interests. Soon after, he used his skills in editing and grammar by accepting a position on the copy desk of Southern Living Magazine. At the same time, he started working nights and weekends as a line cook and baker for a restaurant, supplementing a formal culinary education under the guidance of several chefs. He would spend the next 5 years working around the country with positions as a pastry chef, head baker, and private chef, honing his skills in the kitchen and learning as much as he could about the science and history undergirding modern cooking and baking.

Micah was a fellow for Southern Living from 2017-2018. He worked as a line cook and baker at Brick & Tin in Birmingham, Alabama from 2017-2018. In 2019, he began developing recipes for Southern Living and has since completed nearly 200 recipe development projects. In 2020, he began hosting food videos for Southern Living. He has enjoyed using that platform to educate the Southern Living audience on various cooking and baking methods.
