In 1984 my family was very new to the Parkersburg, WV area.  My oldest was almost 5 years old and the following summer she played T-Ball for a kids league at the DuPont Fields. They won their championship that year! After the last game, one family invited everyone to their house for a picnic.  The hostess made these terrific baked beans and I just had to have the recipe.

From that point on, anytime we had an event, these beans were our go-to, and when they were served everyone ate them. No leftovers. The guys always liked to put them on a hot dog or even just on a bun!  My daughter—who was so young then and has now been married for almost 21 years—always makes these beans for get-togethers and it is her signature dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef

  • 3 large green peppers, grated on the large holes of a box grater, or in a food processor

  • 2 large onions, chopped

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste

  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

  • 2 (19.75 ounce) cans pork and beans, such as Campbell’s® Pork and Beans

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

  2. Cook and stir ground beef, green pepper, onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper together in a large skillet over medium-high heat until beef is browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.

  3. Stir in pork and beans, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour into a 9x13-inch baking pan. Cover with foil.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until hot and bubbly, about 1 hour.
