Aldi is near and dear to our hearts. From helping to fight inflation to offering low-cost private label products that are just as delicious as the alternatives, Aldi does it all. And consumers enjoy Aldi’s way of doing business. Last year, Aldi was the fastest growing grocer in the United States and it shows no sign of slowing down.

This German grocery chain, which started as a modest discount store, opened its first U.S. location in Iowa in 1976 and now has more than 2,000 stores in 38 states. The store has its quirks, yes, like “renting” carts for a quarter, quick checkout lines, and smaller stores.

Still, the chain has a lot of loyalists, and it's bound to get a few more. Among the many reasons why bargain hunters and discount shoppers love Aldi is for this deal on baked goods.

How To Get Discounted Baked Goods

This trick requires having a keen eye for expiration dates. While Aldi’s baked goods are reasonably priced already, shoppers can get these perishables at half the price if they are buying the item within a few days of the expiration date.

It isn’t too clear when the discount actually kicks in, as some shoppers say two days before the expiration date while others have received the discount as many as five days before. In a Reddit thread discussing what the white dated label on a package of English muffins meant, user Ignoringtree commented, "That’s the sell by date, It’s mostly for us employees to know when stuff has to be marked down or taken off the sales floor." Which confirms that leading up to the sell-by date, Aldi will discount the price, but we still don't know just how early that is. The discount might be up to the cashier’s discretion, so politely asking might bring the best results from the Aldi staff.

To find the expiration date on items, look for a small, white label placed on the packaging. The white label could have just the month and day it is set to expire, or a “sell by” date.

In the United Kingdom, discounts go even farther on perishable goods that are expiring the same day you are buying them. These items can be discounted as much as 75 percent. Now, this perk is so good, we think it should exist in the U.S.

How To Keep Bread Fresh

After you bought a loaf of bread, you might not eat it as quickly as you would like. And if you purchased the baked good close to its expiration date, the bread may become stale or worse, moldy.

If it is moldy, it is best to throw it out. That loaf is too far gone. However, if the bread or other baked good is only stale or dry, here are five steps to reviving your loaf

If you're taking home a loaf that's set to expire soon, use these tips and tricks to store bread so it stays fresher longer. Storing bread in paper rather than plastic, avoiding the fridge, or using a bread box are all great ways to extend the life of your loaf.
