‘Chippy Boys’ Are the 3-Ingredient Snack Our Test Kitchen Couldn’t Stop Eating

This is the best thing you can do with a bag of potato chips.

When it comes to viral three-ingredient snacks, we've tried them all. The three-ingredient Crème Brûléegle? Tried it. Popcorn Rice Krispies Treats? Tried it and loved it. The microwaved Oreo cake? Make it every year when it inevitably comes back around on social media as a trend. Selena Gomez's pickle juice snow cone? Okay, maybe we skipped that one, but we've been there to vet every other too-good-to-be-true snack that ends up on your feeds.

The latest one to capture our attention—and that of over 1.5 million other TikTok users—was a concoction affectionately coined "Chippy Boys." We first came across this snack on the page of creator @kaelahe. As far as we can tell, "Chippy Boys" are Kaelah's creation, but now they're taking the internet—and our test kitchen—by storm. Why? Because they are downright dangerously delicious.

What Are Chippy Boys?

Simply put because they're simply made, Chippy Boys are potato chips that have been toasted and mixed with cheese and balsamic glaze. It's an easy way to elevate a midnight snack (though we're still not opposed to just diving into the bag of chips in bed) and customize the ultimate salty treat, potato chips.

In the viral video, Kaelah makes her "Chippy Boys" with plain, kettle-cooked potato chips (Miss Vickie's, to be exact), Gorgonzola, and store-bought balsamic glaze, which is just balsamic vinegar that's been reduced down until thick and sweet. According to the creator, blue cheese is her favorite, but if you're not a fan of the pungent stuff, you can also use feta, goat cheese, or any other semi-soft cheese that you like.

To make "Chippy Boys", all you have to do is spread however many chips you'd like on a parchment-lined sheet tray and top with the crumbled cheese of your choice. Then broil or toast them in the oven or toaster oven until they're golden brown. Don't go far—they tend to toast quickly and can easily burn if left unattended. You may also want to pull them out halfway through toasting and mix them around if you have a lot on the tray to ensure the ones on the top and bottom toast evenly.

When they're toasted to your desired doneness, pull them out and drizzle with balsamic glaze. Carefully transfer them to a bowl and toss to coat. Then enjoy—we certainly did.

We Tried the Viral "Chippy Boys"

When we saw these come across our feed, we knew these had Allrecipes' senior producer, Nicole McLaughlin's name written all over them. Nachos are her favorite food, after all. Think of Chippy Boys like nachos' grown-up older sibling, but just as comforting as the OG. McLaughin says, "Gorgonzola is a stinky cheese, especially when cooked, but the sophisticated palate people get it." And if you're not a fan of the smellier cheeses, just swap in one you like.

One bite in and Nicole was hooked:

"That's gonna be dangerous." According to McLaughlin, "Gorgonzola plus balsamic is just a natural match made in heaven," and adding salty potato chips as "the vessel to enjoy it all" seals the deal as a snack for the ages.

The verdict? "I'm all about this midnight snack," especially when enjoyed alongside a cold glass of white wine.

“They were crunchy, sweet, salty, tangy! So surprisingly good,” says our supervising producer, Rebecca Guthrie. What you don't see on camera is that apparently, they were gone in minutes, gobbled down by our video team staff. If that isn't the highest stamp of approval, I don't know what is.
