Looking for the perfect sweet treat to serve for your Fourth of July festivities? While Cherry Flag Pie or Red, White, and Blue Cheesecake Bars might be some of the first things that come to mind when reaching for a recipe, you won’t want to pass up on this simple and delicious Blueberry Galette. The fruit-filled dessert requires minimal effort, just a few ingredients, and only 20 minutes of hands-on time before it's ready to pop in the oven.

Why We Love This Recipe

Let’s start with the filling. Fresh, in-season blueberries make for a jammy, sweet filling that doesn’t require a long list of ingredients to make it delicious. The only added flavors in this recipe are lavender and lemon, which add subtle floral and citrus notes that highlight the natural flavor of the berries.

As for the crust? Forget about fussing with a disk of pie dough to get it just right in the pie plate. This recipe calls for store-bought puff pastry to make things a breeze. And though we love a classic blueberry pie, there’s no lattice work necessary with this recipe. The laid-back-dessert might look fancy, but it's a cinch to pull together, even for non-bakers.

The best part about a galette is it doesn't take a lot of effort for it to be pretty—the exposed colorful filling does the work for you. All you have to do is fold up the edges of the dough to keep the filling from leaking out. For a crisped-to-perfection golden crust, be sure to brush the edges of the dough with egg wash and sprinkle on a little extra sugar.

How To Make It Your Own

While we have plenty of other sweet and savory galettes you can turn to, including strawberry, tomato, and gingered peach, there are many other ways to put a spin on this blueberry one. We've yet to find a fruit or vegetable that isn’t enjoyable in a puff pastry or pie crust. And though we love the extra pillowy, flakey layers that puff pastry brings to the dessert, you can easily substitute it for store-bought or homemade pie crust as well.

For an additional patriotic nod, add a hint of red by mixing in strawberries or raspberries. And don’t fret if you don’t have dried culinary lavender. You can omit it completely, or use a drizzle of lavender honey to bring in the floral notes.

The Best Way To Serve It

Though a bite of this blueberry galette is heavenly on its own, we highly recommend serving it a la mode. Top it with your favorite vanilla ice cream or homemade whipped cream to complete the dessert. Be sure to allow it to cool for about 15 minutes to make it easier to cut into wedges. It’s best enjoyed when slightly cooled, but still warm on the inside.
