If there is one way to upgrade a salad or dip, it’s to go for a homemade version. This blue cheese dressing is a good example of how easy it can be. With just a few ingredients — buttermilk, sour cream, chives, onion powder, vinegar, and blue cheese — you’ll have a blue cheese dressing or dip ready in five minutes.

    Any type of blue cheese will work for blue cheese dressing but we prefer a French Roquefort or Italian Gorgonzola, as they have a stronger, tangier flavor.

    Ranch dressing is also a creamy dip but it generally contains more herbs, such as dill and parsley in addition to the chives. In addition to containing blue cheese, blue cheese dressing has the addition of vinegar to add a little more tang.

    The blue cheese dressing recipe works as both a dressing and as a dip; simply adjust the consistency adding a little more buttermilk to make it a little thinner and more sour cream to thicken it up. If you don’t have fresh chives, you can swap in a tablespoon of dried chives to use instead of fresh. Apple cider vinegar gives this dip just a touch of tang but any vinegar, such as rice vinegar, white wine vinegar, or white vinegar will work, too.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

  • 1/4 cup sour cream

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

  • 3/4 cup crumbled blue cheese

  • Pinch of kosher salt, plus more as needed

  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Whisk buttermilk, sour cream, chives, onion powder, and vinegar in a medium bowl until smooth. Stir in blue cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
